I have heard about this plumping shampoo and conditioner from Kevin Murphy, and of course I had to try it. Now I have been using it for about 2 months so I figured a little review could be fun (or not, depending on how easily you’re entertained).
My thoughts about the Kevin Murphy Plumping Wash and Rinse:
+ It did give me a little bit of volume
+ A small amount goes a long way
+ The design
– The smell. It reminds me of baby powder
– I had to blow dry my hair to notice any increase of volume. You couldn’t tell my hair looked fuller by just looking at it
– Residue from the rinse. It feels like it’s never really being rinsed out of your hair
– The price, it’s pretty expensive
– Gave me scalp eczema
Overall I’m not stoked about this product. It didn’t give me a noticeable amount of increased volume. The main reason I probably won’t use it again is because of my now irritated scalp. After a quick look at Kevin Murphy’s website, I found that the active ingredients in the product are nettle extract, ginger root extract, and oleanolic acid.
I’m not an expert, but after googling the ingredients for 5 minutes I found that nettle extract can cause irritation and a burning sensation when used topical (on your body). Apparently all three of the key ingredients are supposed to prevent hair loss, but that also means they have to be pretty strong. My sensitive skin couldn’t handle it. According to some sources (here and here), you can eat nettle extract and ginger and get the same result. However, I’m not sure how I would feel about that when I can’t even put it on me.
If you feel like you have thin hair but not sensitive skin I think you can try using the Kevin Murphy Plumping Series, but don’t expect a miracle to happen. If you have sensitive skin, try a different product or add some volume by using extensions, a volumizer, or just be happy with what you got.
